Tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do
Kasia and I are sisters and grew up in Melbourne after migrating from Poland with our parents at the age of 4 and 5. From our late teens we had a strong interest in property. We started going to property seminars before we were 20 and buying, renovating and developing property soon after. We now live on the Gold Coast, where we love the slower pace and waterside, outdoor lifestyle.
We launched Zephyr and Stone approximately four years ago, which is an interior design studio, but also a multi-faceted business. Foremost we design and develop homes and use these projects to showcase products, and share building and renovation tips with our audience. We have the Zephyr and Stone website which is a hub of invaluable building and design resources, free tips sheets and information, along with a curated range of furniture in the online store. We also work with clients directly providing bespoke interior design and furniture selection.
What inspired you to start doing architecture/interior design?
Our design careers were really inspired by the experience of buying, renovating and flipping property in our early 20’s. We then moved onto building and more formal design education, although most of the know-how we share comes from the years spent onsite; hands on in the early days and now generally design management of projects. We were drawn to interior design because it fulfills our need to create spaces and experiences for people, explore ideas, and we love that no two days are the same.
What has been a highlight of your career so far?
The growth of Zephyr and Stone is definitely one of the highlights. When we first established the brand, we had no firm ambitions or direction, so it’s grown beyond anything we could have imagined. We’re proud that Zephyr and Stone has grown organically and that everything we share is honest and authentic and a true representation of who we are.
How would you describe your style?
We always endeavour to design quality homes that are neutral and timeless. I don’t think we have a style as such, but more an outlook of how we want our homes to feel. Words that come to mind are – uncomplicated, open and filled with natural light. Balance and space is paramount to every floor plan and design, and we generally don’t design spaces without first ensuring the floor plan is maximised. We always choose finishes that will appeal to 80% of potential buyers and don’t follow trends as we look to create homes that will age gracefully.
Share with us 1 of your career goals?
We don’t have any career goals as such, however are excited to see how far we can take Zephyr and Stone. We have a lot of exciting projects and business concepts under development and look forward to growing and evolving our brand. We’ve pretty much always worked for ourselves, and there’s not a lot that compares to being your own boss and doing what you love every day.
If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
We’ve both been fortunate enough to have travelled to a number of amazing destinations. If I had to pick one place to go now, it would be Italy for it’s history, Art and Culture or New York for it’s fast pace. I especially love destinations filled with design, history and Art. My last big trip before Covid was to Peru where the design of homes and interiors was so inspiring. I love holidays that spark creativity and ideas.
What is your all time favourite cafe/restaurant?
Some of our favourites are Chin Chin in Melbourne, Fleet in Brunswick Heads, Hellenika at the Calile Hotel, and our local favourite is Ioesco in Sanctuary Cove.
What is 1 thing on your bucket list?
We try and live for the present and to be honest, bucket lists don’t play much of a role. We try and live our lives to the fullest and always take chances and opportunities when we can. We feel fortunate to have already achieved many of the goals we set in our early 20’s. Goals from here for me are to write a fiction book (I’ve already started a few!?) and holiday destinations on our bucket list are the Maldives and New York.
Who are some people in your industry that you admire?
Top designers we admire are Mimdesign and Kate Walker Design. Their designs, style and detail is second to none. We also admire Three Birds Renovations for their business and content creation. They were a huge influence for us when we first started Zephyr and Stone.
From the latest Object X collection, if you had to style 1 piece from the collection, which one would it be? And talk us through how you would style it and the perfect setting.
For us it would have to be Object 02 and Object 07. We love a round table for it’s organic lines so these pieces stand out. We see them in a waterfront home with a relaxed aesthetic, that would feel more like a resort or holiday destination than a typical residential home.
